Two projects today - Painting the Cluricaun target and preparing the Light Fighting Swords (These are a bit of a secret so you will have to wait until next month for information on them) Still have a ways to go. Haven't decided whether to have trim on the edges of the tunic or not. There is very little reference material on the subject. Most of what I found was notes that they wore purple clothing, red hats and stood about three feet tall. The target is the proper height. ^_^
Well, with Jessters help I managed to get all the burning done! Now we just need to pick out some stain. ^_^ Todays goal is to get the Cluricaun target assembled and at least partially painted.
It is not that I have been doing nothing.... The last few days have been spent on the archery target. I got the Cluricaun target cut out and almost ready to paint - I'm working on the edges. This time I'm just doing a couple layers of paper mache. We ran two zip cords on the back to loop around a piece of rebar we will have staked in the ground. We have to plan for high wind since this IS Texas. Cutting was a pain - Thick corrugated cardboard does not like doing that. By the time I finished with this, I had a system down - then cut an extra two so I can make another one later. ^_^ A little more work on the edges and it will be ready to paint. The top is ready to paint but I want to have it glued down before I start that. But today I am taking a break from that and working on the Light Fighting Weapon and Armor chest. The chest itself was built by Edward Hastings. I will be decorating the sides with the handles, then it will get a coat of stain and sealant. Of course I will be going with wood burning since it is the nicest smelling of my crafts. Nothing too intricate but enough to make it special. I think I will burn on the bottom the year and event name. I just want to make sure there is still area open for personalisation. They may want to paint a coat of arms or something, you know? Well, that's one side drawn out. I should stop procrastinating and get back to it. I want to at least have the other side drawn by tonight. I hope to have SOME burning done by tonight. If not, I plan on having it all done by tomorrow. Then I have to start on heavy fighting chest (This is the small one. Yes, I'm serious. The other one is pretty awesome ^_^ It can double as a fort for the kids)
Apologies! I have been quite busy with a side of lazy. Multi-update today! The target is almost done. Original plans for edging fell through (Shock? Surprise? Nope.) so there is tape to even things out. I should have done this between the two layers of cardboard. Thought of it late... so another layer needs to be added. After that a bit of spray paint and it's done! While still cool - the original is being a real pain to balance. The wings are too large, the head too heavy. Any alterations will make the whole thing way too heavy for the required use... so I started the next two and set it aside. These have two strings to assure proper balance. As you can see, they are making good progress. They are far from perfect... but I can't afford to obsess over perfection on items that will be destroyed next month. Next - the chair. It took time and annoyed the crap out of the neighbors, but we got the pieces cut. All done with hand tools. A saw, chisel and hammer. The torso is my awesome husband who did the majority of the work while I cheered him on. The finished chair base. It is sittable!
Not perfect... very heavy. He plans on cutting a bit from the 'feet' to give it four points to balance on which will improve stability. We will shortly be chiselling the top to better fit the shapes to be carved/burned in. Sanding has begun (boy, is oak hairy!) and we are still trying to narrow down possible projects for the remaining wood. |
